Am I the only person not swept up in this Ricky Gervais hysteria? I mean, he's OK. He's mildly amusing.
But I get this feeling that he's really just a smarmy self-satisfied creep.
Is it just me?

Not at all. I didn't watch much of The Office and his stand ups are not my kinda thing!
No! He makes me feel sick....
Another No.
Isnt it great ...
Knowing youre not alone?

Ah! This is very encouraging. I've mentioned this to friends before and they look at you like, "are you mad"?
he's just another minor league person who has done well because there is so little real talent out there.
i think.
Good point.
It's funny what we consider as humourus, Ricky Gervais is not on my list of laughs either...............
I like Reeves and Mortimer and Armstrong and Miller
Reeves and Mortimer definitely...Black Books is one of my faves!
I meant "also one of my faves", I'm not under the impression Reeves and Mortimer were in Black Books!
OK my man Ricky Gervias Lead singer of some shit 80's band and now alleged British Comedy Messiah!
One word on both SHITE!
Was he really in an 80s band? I always though that was just some stupid story he made up. What were they called?
Music
In his final year in 1983 as a student at UCL,[11] Gervais and his friend Bill Macrae formed a pop duo, Seona Dancing (named after a friend and fellow student Seona Myerscough), and they were signed by record label London Records. London Records released two of their singles: "More to Lose" and "Bitter Heart". The singles failed to break the top 40, charting at positions 117 and 70 of the UK singles charts respectively.[12]
A year later, the single "More to Lose" was re-released in Manila as "Medium" by "Fade". The single gained a following by Filipino teenagers after being played by a local DJ on station DWRT-FM (99.5).
He was briefly the manager of the band Suede and a Queen tribute band.
Oh please! he's sooo last millennianiumnumia...ianum.. ahem.
Have to say I think he's great on the whole. Never big a fan of The Office (apart from his dance), but Extras was superb... Patrick Stewart seeing everything, and David Bowie singing "little fat man"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAe1GivBIC4
And the muffin sketch is comedy genius, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaBdkugW_gs
His stand ups were good considering he wasn't trained for it. Many career comedians were well impressed with him.
Fair enough, I'll have a look at those when I get home. Cheers!
Yeah, not bad. I'm a big Bowie fan, so that swayed me a little bit.
i think he's funny! in extras the funniest bit was Ronnie Corbet of the two Ronnies fame doing coke in the toilets!
LOL. You're the only one who is brave enough to admit that!
I love Ricky Gervais too! He is hysterical!
People go on about Extras at work, and it kind of sounds funny in theory but somehow when I watch it, it just isn't. Well, it doesn't work on me, anyway!
I used to like THe Office. With time, the joke just wore off. I never got down to watching Extras though so I don't know why I'm commenting... erm...
I don't watch much tele but whenever i've seen him I too have thought "Smarmy"..I couldn't understand why my daughter would travel 120 miles to see him in a live show
He's an idiot.
Funny you should say that. My Dad described his character in The Office as a creep! Me, I must be the only person who never watched it, so I can't comment.
The Office was sort of OK at the time, but I can't imagine wanting to watch it now, or ever again really.
I think it's just a case of the tv media wanting to over-enthuse about somebody, and Ricky Gervais was the latest object of their attentions. There were similar hysterias about Steve Coogan, and Ben Elton before that. At least Steve Coogan is actually funny though.
I think it's because he is non offensive and 'safe' to the BBC and can easily be re-sold to the States, which makes the BBC a nice piece of cash.
I don't really think he is that funny, it's the writers that make him funny, his smarmy attitude is a put on for the camera really, kinda like someone always acting in a sarcastic manner... he does have his moments but is not one of the greats such as Bills Hicks and Spike Milligan (just a couple to mention).
Yes I totally agree with the Ben Elton comment above, he is an average writer and nothing more, Steve Coogan did his best work within Partridge and with Chris Morris, but since that it's all stale and "samey", still can be funny at times.
Like most things he has his moments, but it's kinda obvious a little and wears off after while, like Little Britain, the fast show et al.
Anyway i've got a rubber chicken to hold in the air at a function in Liverpool. wish me luck.,
B
Some very good points there...oh, and good luck with that rubber chicken!
Nope, I loathe him, his humour, those stupid kids monster books he does, and most of all, his face.
That's a fairly comprehensive list of reasons not to like Ricky Gervais!
Mmm. T'ain't much else to him though!
I had forgotten about those rubbish childrens books he does. What a complete vanity project they are!
I think I'm american, I don't find stand up comedians very funny at all I'm afraid!
What, none of them?
